Overview
This 11-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari is an immersive, multi-destination journey crafted for travelers who want to experience the very best of Rwanda’s primates, wildlife, culture, and scenic beauty in one seamless itinerary. From the rolling savannahs of Akagera National Park to the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe and the dramatic volcanic slopes of Volcanoes National Park, this safari brings together Rwanda’s most iconic landscapes and its most sought-after wildlife encounters.
Your adventure begins in Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most welcoming cities. After exploring its vibrant markets, cultural centers, and historical landmarks, you venture east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Big Five savannah reserve. Here, you’ll enjoy classic game drives in search of lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and an abundance of plains game, as well as a tranquil boat safari on Lake Ihema that provides close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, and rich birdlife.
From the savannah, the journey transitions to the lush highland forests of Nyungwe National Park, home to chimpanzees and 12 other primate species. Trek through pristine rainforest in search of chimps, spot colobus monkeys leaping through the canopy, and experience one of East Africa’s most breathtaking forest experiences on the Nyungwe Canopy Walk. The cool mountain air, mist-shrouded scenery, and sprawling tea plantations create a serene environment ideal for nature lovers and photographers.
The safari then leads you north to the legendary Volcanoes National Park, where you undertake one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences—gorilla trekking. Spending time with a habituated gorilla family in their natural habitat is both humbling and exhilarating, offering an unmatched connection with one of the rarest animals on Earth. You’ll also have the opportunity to track golden monkeys, visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, explore local cultural villages, or relax in your lodge overlooking the Virunga volcanoes.
Throughout the journey, you’ll stay in handpicked accommodations that offer comfort, panoramic views, warm hospitality, and excellent access to key wildlife areas. Professional local guides accompany you every step of the way, ensuring safe treks, fulfilling wildlife sightings, and insightful interpretation of Rwanda’s ecology, conservation efforts, and culture.
This 11-day safari is designed for travelers who want more than a quick highlight reel—it offers depth, diversity, and meaningful connection. Whether you’re seeking the thrill of tracking gorillas through misty bamboo forests, the excitement of spotting predators on the savannah, or the tranquility of Rwanda’s forested mountain landscapes, this itinerary delivers a comprehensive and unforgettable exploration of the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
