Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four gorilla trekking sectors—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo—and each offers a slightly different experience. Buhoma is the most popular and generally offers the easiest treks, making it ideal for first-time visitors. Ruhija is known for its beautiful high-altitude scenery and excellent birding, while Rushaga has the highest number of gorilla families and is the only sector offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Nkuringo is the most challenging, perfect for fit hikers seeking steep, adventurous terrain.
The “best” sector depends on your interests and travel route. Choose Buhoma for easier hikes and great accommodation options, Ruhija for stunning views, Rushaga for better permit availability and habituation, and Nkuringo if you want a tougher trek. Travelers coming from Kigali often prefer Rushaga or Nkuringo due to their convenient southern location.
A standard gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park costs US $800 for foreign non-residents, US $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. These permits allow you to spend up to one hour with a fully habituated mountain gorilla family, accompanied by park rangers and guides.
If you prefer a more immersive experience, the gorilla habituation permit is available at US $1,500 for foreign non-residents, US $1,000 for foreign residents, and UGX 750,000 for East African citizens. This special option allows you to spend up to four hours with a group undergoing habituation, offering more time for photography and observation.
Yes, you can request to reschedule a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda, but it is not automatic or guaranteed. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) allows rescheduling only under valid circumstances, such as illness, emergencies, or unavoidable travel disruptions. The request must be made in advance, and the new date must have available permits.
Keep in mind that rescheduling is handled case by case, and last-minute changes are often declined. It’s best to contact your tour operator or UWA as soon as possible once you realize you can’t make your original trekking date. The earlier you request the change, the higher your chances of getting a new slot.
